Case involving alleged betting scheme involving Elgin City player continues in court

The striker's club played Kelty Hearts that evening, and the matter was continued in his absence at Dundee Sheriff Court on Monday, January 25, 2022. He was instrumental in Elgin's 2-0 victory in the League Two match, scoring both goals.

Allegedly, Hester and others planned to wager on referee Willie Collum issuing a yellow card to him before a 2019 cup match against Hibernian. The striker is accused of intentionally drawing a yellow card by stamping on an opponent player.

In the group stage encounter between Hibernian and the Scottish League Cup on July 26, 2019, Hester was shown a yellow card. Hester is one of four people accused of defrauding internet bookmaker bet365 of £13,583 ($18,345).

Hester was said to have "purposely committed a foul during the course of the match and received a booking from the referee" as part of an agreement the foursome allegedly made over a week before to the match at Borough Briggs Stadium. They took a stand against "forming a fraudulent scheme to obtain money by placing bets that Kane Hester would receive a booking by the referee during the match" and have disputed the allegations.

The court has adjourned the case until later this year after hearing that the prosecution and defence agents may reach an agreement on some pieces of evidence, but that experts would have to review the prosecution's phone evidence before the trial is set to begin.

This follows the recent notice of complaint against Gavin Swankie, a player for Arbroath, who was accused of nine violations of gambling restrictions set out by the Scottish FA.
